I think I may have done something bad

Yesterday I decided to clean my bowling balls. It had been over 3 months since I had done it last. Of course I hadn't bowled in all that time either, so it wasn't necessary, but now that's changed.

Anyways, as I was lifting, and rotatng the first ball, to clean a different portion of it, I felt something pull, or tear, or I don't know what. The left side of my chest is still numb, so I can't always tell right away if I may or may not of hurt myself.

It didn't feel that bad right after it happened, so I finished cleaning the other 2 balls. I was just more cautious as I was lifting and rotating the balls.

The problem now is, after going for a short bike ride this morning (probably not a wise decision), with a friend, it is starting to cause me some discomfort. I keep getting these small stinging sensations on the left side of my chest.

I think I best put some ice on it now, just in case.

A) If you have bowling balls, isn't it hard to walk (I crack me up) and 2) you think you might have torn something so you go for a bike ride? Who does that?

What is wrong with your gendor? Or to quote the doctor who found out John went to work in freezing cold weather with a cold, a fever, a bad heart and diabetes, "You're an idiot!"

Well, I never claimed to be the brightest bulb on the planet, or even the smartest metallurgist, although as time marches on, I am getting closer. :)

It wasn't my plan to go for a bike ride, but a friend called, and I have trouble turning down friends to do anything, so.................

So far this morning, my chest isn't feeling too bad, at least not any worse.

Glad to hear it isn't any worse and hopefully you didn't tear anything internally that is still trying to heal. Get a Wii for crying out loud. :-)

Marc: Is Rebecca your wife ? Riding hardly involves chest muscles, but does up your circulation, so it is good to promote healing. So, neener neener, 'Becca. If she does not believe me, I'll post links from PubMed.

Have you tried lowering the fat in your diet to see if your immune system improves ? Are you using a heart monitor and watching for cardiac drift to give closure to workouts and time to scale back or cool down ?

I finally pulled the strained left upper rhomboid after two months or so. Pain killer and inactivity helped some, then a minor strain again in one evening of volleyball. Five days of muscle relaxer and the entire area is completely healed. This past weekend, played Vb four times, 90 minutes three times and for four hours another. No pain.

Wii's are boring.

What weight are your bowling balls ? I use a 12#. A lot of bowlers are 200-300 lbs. With a max at 16#, that puts the ball at no more than 6% to 8% of body weight. If you are 160 #, a 16# ball is 10%.

Remember e = mc squared ? Speed is squared. You get more energy in the pins if you can get the ball down the lane faster. Easier to get a lighter ball faster. I don't know how, but I sure piss off my bowling buddy when I center strike the pins and almost never see a split. I did that eight times in a row one game, and picked up the spares. Maybe its my ball with a bit better velocity. Definitely not my skill, with an average of only 138.

No Becky isn't my wife, but we did work closely together for over 20 years, so there may be some resemblance there. :)

Yes I do use a HR monitor, but I don't really need it to tell me about heart rate drift. My body tells me, as I start getting tired. I use my HR monitor mostly to let me know how hard I'm working.

And as far as bowling goes, you've got it wrong. True, the faster a ball goes the better, but only if you can get the ball rolling before hitting the pins, creating the greatest pin action.

How fast you can get a ball to roll depends on a number of factors, which include the quantity of oil and the pattern of the oil on the lanes, and the weight of the ball, along with construction of the ball, i.e. the core and cover stock, and how it is drilled.

Bowling is a lot more complicated and technical than it was just 20 years ago.

You missed or did not care for my point about cardiac drift. Try going with it as a plan for a month, two months better. If you do, you will find you can keep extending your limits WITHOUT fatigue, and there will be no need for days or a week to recover. Too much exercise is a form of stress, and damaged muscles are not anti-cancer or anti-heart disease in any way. Plus I believe it leaves your blood pressure elevated, besides jacking it up while you push through the workout.

Do not work until you are tired, its all cardiac fatigue. How long does it take to be well recovered from those workouts ?

If you FEEL tired, you are long past cardiac drift. Highly likely have gone beyond what is considered a maximal safe workout, and need on the order of a week, with minimal exercise to fully recover.

There is my two cents plus, again. Live long and prosper.

Fatigue! Part II - Maybe it is real?

Or it's actually Motivational Deficiency Disorder, MoDeD (pronounced Mo-Dee-Dee) for short. In a report this week by Roy Moynihan who reports for the British Medical Journal Austrailian scientists may have come across the reason for extreme laziness . The condition is claimed to affect up to one in five Australians and is characterised by overwhelming and debilitating apathy. Neuroscientists at the University of Newcastle in Australia say that in severe cases motivational deficiency disorder can be fatal, because the condition reduces the motivation to breathe. Neurologist Leth Argos is part of the team that has identified the disorder, which can be diagnosed using a combination of positron emission tomography and low scores on a motivation rating scale, previously validated in elite athletes. "This disorder is poorly understood," Professor Argos told the BMJ. "It is underdiagnosed and undertreated." Who knew? Maybe I have MoDeD, from my attempts to become a...

My concerns reaffirmed today

When I was first diagnosed with MCL, I pretty much read just about everything I could get my hands on, I attended various conferences, and I talked to anyone who would listen. One of the most important lessons I learned, and which I've mentioned numerous times before was No one cares more about you than you. But in addition to that, I learned to fear the drug Doxorubicin , AKA Adriamycin, Doxil, Hydroxydoxorubicin, or more affectionately the Red Devil. Besides being a deadly chemical, as is the case with most chemotherapy drugs, it is one of the few chemotherapy drugs known to cause permanent heart damage. I even heard Dr. Sandra Horning , a noted Stanford lymphoma specialist, state at the first lymphoma conference I attended in LA, there was no evidence Doxorubicin provided any added benefit to chemotherapy protocols. This was music to my ears, since Doxorubicin is very common in most lymphoma treatment protocols. And even though Dr. Horning has since changed her tune [which my sk...

Tacitly condoning racism?

I learned something very discouraging in my current events class yesterday, there are a lot more racists and bigots out there then you may think. They may not admit it, or they'll claim otherwise, but when someone says they place the blame for what happened in Charlottesville on both sides, or better yet, they don't know where the blame lays, then they are condoning the action of the white supremacists groups, and in my book that is a racist/bigot. The truth is, there should be no doubt where blame for Charlottesville lays. It lays with the white supremacists, neo-Nazi's, KKK, etc, plain and simple! The hatred, bigotry, and misogyny displayed and espoused by these groups, coupled with the tacit approval of President Trump needs to be confronted at all cost, and history tells us so. If only the Jews, in pre-WWII Germany, had confronted the Nazi's in the same manner, Hitler might never have risen to power, and we would not be looking at the prospect of a  third anti...
