I've been scammed

And I have no one to blame but myself. I failed to read a contract, or at least failed to properly understand it.

I thought by paying a yearly fee to Orkin for termite inspections of our home, and needed re-treatments, after the initial treatment [tenting] in 1990, we would be covered for any future structural damage [caused by termites] that might occur. Isn't that what insurance is for?

Well as it turns out, the so called Orkin guarantee, does nothing more than guarantee they will retreat (at no charge) if termites are found. It doesn't matter whether they were negligent in performing annual inspections, and missed termite infestations, or if their re-treatments had been inadequate, it isn't their fault if termites return, and structural damage occurs 20 years later.

[note]Sort of sounds like the health insurance industry. You pay your premiums, but there's no guarantee the insurance company is going to cover your health care expenses.[/note]

So now after paying Orkin some $4000 in premiums over the past 20+ years, we're faced with spending some unknown additional amount for structural repairs, which Orkin conveniently happens to be in the business of doing as well. They're giving us a price this afternoon.

Now if that doesn't sound like a scam to everyone out there, than nothing should.

On top of all that, and what might even be a bigger hassle is we have to bag up all our food [and wine], in preparation for tenting, and spend 3 days in a hotel (at our expense), which with two cats, is not what I would call a vacation.

And here I thought I was depressed a couple of days ago. :(

So my one suggestion to everyone, if you're paying a fee to Orkin or some other exterminating company [actually any company], for what you may think is insurance, check your contract, and make sure you know what is covered. Don't be surprised like I was!

But on a more upbeat note, it looks like Edie's latest treatment protocol [Bendamustine + Dex] is showing good results. Her free light chains have shown improvement, so she is going for a third treatment on Tuesday, provided of course her other blood counts aren't any worse than last Monday's results.

If I were you, I would pay someone other than Orkin to repair any structural damage caused by termites. Get several estimates and make sure you check with the California Contracting Board to verify any complaints and what not.
What a ripoff!

If it makes you feel any better, my sink is leaking and my husband is capable of fixing it, but his gut is currently in the way.

And how timely is your post? Clark Pest Control was just at my house and they are Green Pro certified. Maybe you should check for a new pest control company as well.

Well that's a given. Getting a new exterminating company that is.

As it turns out, the quote Orkin provided for the repairs was $1700, consisting primarily of repairing some fascia board. He called it structural, but it really isn't.

It seems inspecting for structural damage is a lot more involved. I'm not even sure they're capable of doing that. More simply put, he couldn't say if there was any structural damage.

Still this whole deal is a real scam. I just haven't decided what to do about it.

And I am iron deficient, big time. [Which would account for my low hemoglobin] Test Result Ref Range IRON 30 59-158 mcg/dL TOTAL IRON BINDING CAPACITY 231 250-420 mcg/dL IRON SAT 13 20-50 % My Ferritin levels were good, but that could be because Ferritin is also an "acute phase reactant", that is sometimes increased with acute or chronic disease. Folate and B12 levels were also within the normal range. The only problem now is determining what is causing the iron deficiency, which in the case of men, is [very] rare. My oncologist has given me a Globin Fecal test to perform, and has scheduled me for a consultation with a colorectal surgeon to discuss performing a colonoscopy, which could be problematic because of my large spleen. In the mean time, I've decided to start taking an iron supplement, it's only the quantity that is causing me some consternation. I've been told by a very knowledgeable person that to overcome an iron deficiency, I need to be taking 300 mg o...

This is just one of those days

It's one of those days you just want to sit around the house and do absolutely nothing, or watch some movies you have recorded. It might even be a good day to read a book, if you were so inclined, which I am not. As you should be able to see from the view out my bedroom window, it is raining outside. The rain started last night, and hasn't let up since. I can't complain too much though, as this is the rainy season, and we do need the rain. Plus Monday's are typically my day off from exercise, so I will surprise everyone, and not complain. I just feel sorry for anyone who might be visiting from, say Argentina, like a friend of mine (fellow MCLer), who happens to be in Cambria today. He might be a little disappointed. Fortunately the rest of the week, when he will be in LA, will be nice, and the real intent of his trip was to visit his son in Tahoe, who works at one of the ski resorts, and ski, so I know he's not complaining too much either. This weather will actually...

When is enough, enough?

Today I learned, Lance Armstrong, the most drug tested athlete in the history of sport, is being accused of doping, again . This time by the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA), who claim they have collected blood samples from him in 2009 and 2010 that were “fully consistent with blood manipulation including EPO use and/or blood transfusions.” Really! What took them so long? The French have been trying to make allegations of drug doping stick for years, ever since he won his first Tour d'France, but to no avail. And now the USADA claims to have evidence to support that claim, and they've waited almost 3 years before releasing this evidence. Needless to say, I am skeptical. Then there's this from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO): Increasing the federal excise tax on cigarettes by 50 cents per pack eventually would increase Medicare and Social Security spending, slightly. Eventually? What is the CBO suggesting here? That we should encourage smoking, because if we don't, in...
