Osteria Mozza

To make up for all my regrets (forgotten and not forgotten) we went to Osteria Mozza in LA for dinner last night with friends. We were celebrating our friends birthday, and as you might guess we had just a little too much to drink. But so what, you only go around once in life, so you might as well do it with gusto, and besides, we had a good reason this time.

Suffice to say, dinner was good. We had a good time, and I would go back.

We started off with a Proseco as a celebratory gesture, followed by a 2003 Domaine Serene, Mark Bradford Vineyard, Pinot Noir, and a Howell Mountain Cabernet with the main course (corkage is only $20 per bottle), and ended with a 13 year old Rip Van Winkle rye (whiskey), which surprisingly was better than expected.

Oh, and the food was good as well. I could elaborate extensively, but I don't want to bore you too much. So I'll just touch on it briefly.

We started off with a selection of mozzarella from the mozzarella bar, then had a little gnocchi and goat cheese ravioli, all of  which were excellent. We then had our main courses which, with the exception of mine which was little tough [yet still extremely flavorful], were all enjoyable. Then of course there was dessert, which for me was not very memorable. We really didn't need it, and I was more focused on the rye anyways.

The best part, at least the most exciting, was Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali were both there. Nancy was even working preparing mozzarella plates, and Mario, while all I observed him doing was schmoozing with some of the patrons, was dressed the part down to his signature Crocks. I didn't get to talk to him, but he was standing about 3 feet from me, and he even brushed up against my friends shoulder as he walked by. I think my friend may have the shirt framed [just kidding].

My only regret this time is I didn't go for a bike ride this AM. I was just a little too hung over (and BTW, I wasn't driving), but I'll easily put that behind me after tomorrows bike ride. The weather should be better too.

Oh, I'm so jealous. I've been to Pizzeria Mozza three times, but have yet to make it to Osteria.

And see, I also want to go to Pizzeria Mozza, since obviously it must be good. You've been there 3 times. Of course there are a ton of other places I want to go also.

That's the problem with living in Long Beach, getting to LA is a pain, and we just don't do it often enough.

Oh well, such is life. Full of all sorts of disappointments.

This is just one of those days

It's one of those days you just want to sit around the house and do absolutely nothing, or watch some movies you have recorded. It might even be a good day to read a book, if you were so inclined, which I am not. As you should be able to see from the view out my bedroom window, it is raining outside. The rain started last night, and hasn't let up since. I can't complain too much though, as this is the rainy season, and we do need the rain. Plus Monday's are typically my day off from exercise, so I will surprise everyone, and not complain. I just feel sorry for anyone who might be visiting from, say Argentina, like a friend of mine (fellow MCLer), who happens to be in Cambria today. He might be a little disappointed. Fortunately the rest of the week, when he will be in LA, will be nice, and the real intent of his trip was to visit his son in Tahoe, who works at one of the ski resorts, and ski, so I know he's not complaining too much either. When is enough, enough?

Today I learned, Lance Armstrong, the most drug tested athlete in the history of sport, is being accused of doping, again . This time by the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA), who claim they have collected blood samples from him in 2009 and 2010 that were “fully consistent with blood manipulation including EPO use and/or blood transfusions.” Really! What took them so long? The French have been trying to make allegations of drug doping stick for years, ever since he won his first Tour d'France, but to no avail. And now the USADA claims to have evidence to support that claim, and they've waited almost 3 years before releasing this evidence. Needless to say, I am skeptical. Then there's this from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO): Increasing the federal excise tax on cigarettes by 50 cents per pack eventually would increase Medicare and Social Security spending, slightly.
