It could have been worse

At first glance you'd have thought it was just any other southern California morning. The excessive heat and humidity, we'd been experiencing over the last week or so, was gone, and it was the typical morning (overcast and 62°F) I've grown accustomed to, and actually enjoy, as I headed out shortly before 7 AM to meet the group for our Wednesday bike ride.

Of course while the weather was back to normal, the ride was anything but. Turtle was there, but now that school is back in session, none of the other usual crowd of fast guys were there (a few being teachers), so Turtle just didn't push us that hard, and neither did anyone else. Not even Ricardo who's on a par with Turtle, or Gerry who I think is over trained just a little.

Then I discovered 3/4 of the way to the coffee shop in Corona Del Mar, even Robbie (who is basically a fixture at the coffee shop) turned around early. The rest of us (8) went on to Corona Del Mar, but it was only Ricardo and me who stopped at the coffee shop. The others chose to continue further down the coast and to Laguna Canyon.

It just wasn't what I had planned. A few always go on to Laguna Canyon, but there's usually more who stop at the coffee shop.

Oh well, such is life I guess. Full of all sorts of unexpected twists and turns.

Still as it turned out things started to look up at the coffee shop. I don't know what the reason, but this morning there was just a bevy of good looking women walking by, and into and out of the coffee shop. Way more than normal.

Robbie would really be upset to know what he missed out on, and Guido, well.... I guess school just started a week too early!

I even managed to get a decent workout in on the way back. We met a triathlete [on a mission], who manage to pull me all the way through Huntington Beach, and back into Sunset Beach (about 8+ miles) at no less that 26 mph (and mostly faster), catching only one red light.

So while the morning didn't live up to expectations, it didn't turn out too badly either, which is why I'm only complaining a little.

We missed you in the canyon, Turtle even stayed back a bit to let us do our own ride at a decent pace...... Maybe next week you can join us!

Maybe.

I just wish things would go back the way they were last year, when we all worked our asses off going down to CDM, and everyone stopped at the coffee shop, and on occasion going to Dana Point or where ever. But I guess that isn't going to happen.

I actually would have gone yesterday had Ricardo and Turtle both gone, because I didn't want to ride home alone, but since Ricardo stopped, I stopped.

Fatigue! Part II - Maybe it is real?

Or it's actually Motivational Deficiency Disorder, MoDeD (pronounced Mo-Dee-Dee) for short. In a report this week by Roy Moynihan who reports for the British Medical Journal Austrailian scientists may have come across the reason for extreme laziness . The condition is claimed to affect up to one in five Australians and is characterised by overwhelming and debilitating apathy. Neuroscientists at the University of Newcastle in Australia say that in severe cases motivational deficiency disorder can be fatal, because the condition reduces the motivation to breathe. Neurologist Leth Argos is part of the team that has identified the disorder, which can be diagnosed using a combination of positron emission tomography and low scores on a motivation rating scale, previously validated in elite athletes. "This disorder is poorly understood," Professor Argos told the BMJ. "It is underdiagnosed and undertreated." Who knew? Maybe I have MoDeD, from my attempts to become a...

History IS repeating itself

I didn't grow up during the rise and fall of Hitler and Nazi Germany, so for me to claim it feels like those are the times we are living in now, must be taken with a grain of salt. But I have seen enough movies, and read enough history to know, if the times we're living in now are not akin to the rise of a Nazism and Facism in Europe in the 1930's and 1940's, then we're not far off. If you can't see the parallels with Nazi Germany, then you must be living in a different country than me. Republicans and other right wing extremists will stop at nothing to subvert the will of the majority, forcing their beliefs, that they are the superior race and have been appointed by God, to impose their will on America, while they blame all our problems on immigrants, blacks and Jews. As I speak, Mitch McConnell, and his minions are raising roadblocks to all legislation designed to help average Americans under the guise of fiscal responsibility. They condone violent and verba...

My concerns reaffirmed today

When I was first diagnosed with MCL, I pretty much read just about everything I could get my hands on, I attended various conferences, and I talked to anyone who would listen. One of the most important lessons I learned, and which I've mentioned numerous times before was No one cares more about you than you. But in addition to that, I learned to fear the drug Doxorubicin , AKA Adriamycin, Doxil, Hydroxydoxorubicin, or more affectionately the Red Devil. Besides being a deadly chemical, as is the case with most chemotherapy drugs, it is one of the few chemotherapy drugs known to cause permanent heart damage. I even heard Dr. Sandra Horning , a noted Stanford lymphoma specialist, state at the first lymphoma conference I attended in LA, there was no evidence Doxorubicin provided any added benefit to chemotherapy protocols. This was music to my ears, since Doxorubicin is very common in most lymphoma treatment protocols. And even though Dr. Horning has since changed her tune [which my sk...
