Treatment time is here!

A week or two ago, I posted about Edie possibly needing treatment very soon. Well it seems that time has come.

Yesterday, Edie had her second opinion consultation with Dr. Brian Durie at Cedars Sinai Hospital, and he concurred with the conclusion of her current oncologist at Kaiser, Dr. Simmons. (One good piece of news we have found is that Dr. Simmons is the oncologist to be seeing at Kaiser for myeloma.)

We have decided to go with the Thalidomide plus Dexamethasome protocol, which I believe is delivered in pill form. That doesn't make it any less severe a treatment, but it does make it easier to take. It also leave lots of doors open for future treatments.

All that remains now is securing an appointment, with Dr. Simmons, so that she can begin treatment. Oh yeah, and making sure we get the most out of the next few weeks in the way of culinary pleasures. Among other things, Dexamethasome wreaks havoc on the taste buds. Not sure what Thalidomide will do, but we know it can't be good.

So, how long does the treatment last? Give her my best and be especially patient and buy her lots of chocolate.

Don't know how long it will last. Until she gets a remission plus a few extra cycles for good measure.

Hopefully not too long!

History IS repeating itself

I didn't grow up during the rise and fall of Hitler and Nazi Germany, so for me to claim it feels like those are the times we are living in now, must be taken with a grain of salt. But I have seen enough movies, and read enough history to know, if the times we're living in now are not akin to the rise of a Nazism and Facism in Europe in the 1930's and 1940's, then we're not far off. Stop the stupidity!

Rural medical center (in Georgia) suspended from vaccination program after inoculating school district staff. Give me a break! Trying to get kids back to school, while protecting teachers, bus drivers and other staff, is exactly what school districts should be doing. If they have vaccines, give them out. We should be giving out vaccines to all who want them, whenever available. Trying to adhere to rigid guidelines will only result in fewer people getting vaccines, resulting in the discarding of precious vaccines, and less protection for everyone. Of course we should be giving first priority to healthcare workers, and any other essential public service employees, such as policeman, fireman, etc. first, but when they're not around to receive shots, or refuse shots, then give them to anyone willing to take them.
