We live in a wireless world, right?

Just about everyone has a cellular phone. Internet access is available via wireless wi-fi connections. Many of us travel around communicating with our wireless Blackberry's and Palm Pilot's. We even have a wireless device connected to our A/C at home, which allows Southern California Edison to shut the A/C off, in times of high usage, for a reduced rate. Credit card transactions are conducted wirelessly.

There are wireless speakers for your stereo, and you can control most home electronics from just about anywhere wirelessly.

We live in a wireless world. Wires are a thing of the past. Especially the phone line. Right? Well not so fast.

If we live in a wireless world, why does DirecTV require I have a phone line connected to my TiVo box, in order for me to get my TiVo connected? And this from a company that sends TV signals wirelessly to homes.

Even TiVo users, without DirecTV, can hook up wirelessly using a USB adapter to their boxes instead of hooking it to a land line, but DirecTV has disabled the USB ports on the receiver.

I don't understand it. I don't like wires. We disconnected our land line telephone service 3 years ago, and went strictly cellular. We get free long distance anywhere in the US, plenty of free minutes for making calls, not to mention the convenience of having a phone anytime, anywhere you need it. Even on the golf course! :) I don't see the point of a land line any more.

So why do I need a phone line to hook up my TiVo? Someone tell me, please!

It sounds like a conspiracy to me. Perhaps it's the only way Dubya can keep tabs on you. Or for billing purposes?

A phone line is not needed if you have software version 7.2 or later installed on your DVR. Your DVR can connect to the TiVo Service via your home network.

TiVo isn't the problem it's DirecTV. Everything I have read indicates that DirecTV disables the USB ports, so it doesn't matter software you can't hook it up.

I did get it working, by taking the unit to a friends house and installing it there.

I have an update for the blog tomorrow.

This is just one of those days

It's one of those days you just want to sit around the house and do absolutely nothing, or watch some movies you have recorded. It might even be a good day to read a book, if you were so inclined, which I am not. As you should be able to see from the view out my bedroom window, it is raining outside. The rain started last night, and hasn't let up since. I can't complain too much though, as this is the rainy season, and we do need the rain. Plus Monday's are typically my day off from exercise, so I will surprise everyone, and not complain. I just feel sorry for anyone who might be visiting from, say Argentina, like a friend of mine (fellow MCLer), who happens to be in Cambria today. He might be a little disappointed. Fortunately the rest of the week, when he will be in LA, will be nice, and the real intent of his trip was to visit his son in Tahoe, who works at one of the ski resorts, and ski, so I know he's not complaining too much either. When is enough, enough?

Today I learned, Lance Armstrong, the most drug tested athlete in the history of sport, is being accused of doping, again . This time by the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA), who claim they have collected blood samples from him in 2009 and 2010 that were “fully consistent with blood manipulation including EPO use and/or blood transfusions.” Really! What took them so long? The French have been trying to make allegations of drug doping stick for years, ever since he won his first Tour d'France, but to no avail. And now the USADA claims to have evidence to support that claim, and they've waited almost 3 years before releasing this evidence. Needless to say, I am skeptical. Then there's this from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO): Increasing the federal excise tax on cigarettes by 50 cents per pack eventually would increase Medicare and Social Security spending, slightly.
